New CAFO Threat in Jefferson County

Updated: May 18, 2021

JFAN recently learned that Tom and Jacob Adam are proposing Hill View Site 2, a 3720-head hog confinement for 2704 Salina Road in Buchanan Township. This would be approximately 3/4 mile west from their other CAFO, Hill View Site, which has 3600 hogs. That will bring the number of hogs within that area to over 7000. The integrator is TriOak.

Currently it will generate approximately 900,000 gallons of hog waste from the 3720 hogs.

Hill View Site 1, built three quarters of a mile away a few years ago by the same owners, holds 3600 hogs and generates over 1,550,000 gallons of hog waste. This would bring the total amount of raw hog sewage from both CAFOs to 2.5 million gallons that would be applied to farm land without treatment.

A copy of the CAFO map with the site and the fields to receive the hog waste can be found HERE.

Since the CAFO will contain over 2500 hogs, a Master Matrix is involved. JFAN is currently analyzing the Master Matrix and the Manure Management Plan.

A PUBLIC HEARING on the Master Matrix will take place on Wednesday, May 12, 10:00 a.m. at the Cambridge Building, Jefferson County Fairgrounds. Verbal comments will be limited to 3 minutes with no repetition of previous points. The fairgrounds were chosen to allow for social distancing. Masks are required.

Written comments may be submitted at the meeting or at County Auditors office at the Jefferson County Courthouse no later than 11:30 a.m. May 12.

A PUBLIC SCORING SESSION will take place Friday, May 21, 9:00 a.m. at the Jefferson County Supervisors' Office located in the Jefferson County Courthouse, 51 W. Briggs Avenue. This will also be available via Zoom. We will send out details on how to join the Zoom broadcast closer to the meeting date.

We encourage everyone to attend these meetings and voice your opinions on the CAFO.

If you wish to see a copy of the application, it is available at the County Auditor’s office.
